Sutherland Golf Courses

Play the Scottish Highlands

Sutherland’s a sought-after destination for golfers worldwide and no wonder — its dotted with infamous linksland courses and terrain that will exhilarate, defy, challenge and inspire in equal measure.

Royal Dornoch Golf Club

Wild and isolated, the spellbinding Royal Dornoch Golf Club is a bucket list course for many golfers. Founded in 1877 (though records show golf was played here as early as 1616), it’s one of Scotland’s finest championship courses. It bears the hallmarks of Old Tom Morris, responsible for the original course features, and was a training ground for architect Donald Ross.

You’ll find the 1st hole of Royal Dornoch’s Championship Course right outside our front door.

Tain Golf Club

Another testament to Old Tom Morris’s skill is Tain – originally a 15-hole course, then 12-hole and finally an 18-hole course around 1894. The early 1900s saw a name change to Tain and both then and now, the course remains a favourite. Its sheltered location enables play for most of the year and provides a challenge for beginners and seasoned linksland golfers alike.

Golspie Golf Club

This 6021-yard course, founded in 1889, was influenced by the great James Braid. The course is ideal for all abilities, but will stretch even the most skilled, with linksland, heathland, tricky hole placements and strategic bunkers throughout. A great place to stop and golf for those travelling the North 500 route too.

Brora Golf Club

Brora’s design credentials are impressive. Created in 1891 by James Braid — also responsible for Carnoustie and Gleneagles — the 18-hole course remains relatively unchanged to this day. Expect all the usual hillocks, troughs, tricky terrain and, of course, the unpredictable coastal climate to test your wits.

Nairn Golf Club

A club — and Championship course — with character. Andrew Simpson, Old Tom Morris, James Braid, Ben Sayers and Mackenzie & Ebert have all influenced its design, resulting in a fabulous 18-hole course that will test the mettle of the most gifted golfer. The nine-hole Cameron Course is great for beginner or family outings.

Moray Golf Club

There are two courses to choose from here, aptly named the Old Course and New Course, designed by Old Tom Morris and Henry Cotton respectively. The Old Course features all the classic linksland detail — deep bunkers, undulating fairways and smooth fast greens — while its sibling is a shorter, tighter course with smaller greens, but is every bit as rewarding.
